USC & ASCAP event to feature USC alum, Oscar nominated composer, Marco Beltrami

August 29th, 2011

EVENT: Under the direction of Brian King, the USC film scoring program (SMPTV) partners with ASCAP (Shawn Lemone) to produce an educational workshop in film scoring with 2-time Oscar nominee, and USC alum, Marco Beltrami (“310 to Yuma”, “The Hurt Locker”), and his team, Buck Sanders and Jon Kurlander. The event will be made available as a live web broadcast.

In this setting, Marco Beltrami and collaborator, Buck Sanders, will work directly with the USC student composers to explore the process of re-scoring one of Marco’s previous film projects, “The 3 Burials of Melquiades Estrada”, written by Guillermo Arriaga (“Babel”, “21 Grams” and “Amores Perros”) directed by Tommy Lee Jones.

¬†Marco and Buck will mentor the students through the entire creative process.¬†They will spot the film and select 4-5 scenes for the students to create new, original music for these scenes. With direct support from ASCAP, we will record and produce the students’ music with members of the of the Hollywood Studio Orchestra, contracted by Peter Rotter. The session will be mixed by award winning engineer, Jon Kurlander (Lord of the Rings: “The Fellowship of the Ring”, “The Two Towers” and “Return of the King”), and broadcast live via the internet, hosted by BitGravity, available for viewing on USC & ASCAP’s website.
