Through generous support from the ASCAP Foundation, USC will launch a new “composer-in-residence” program to take place in May 2011. This program is designed to select an ASCAP composer to mentor the USC students through the process of rescoring one of the composer’s film projects. We’ll spot the film with the composer and director, and divide the total number of music cues amongst the 20 USC student composers. When the cues are completed, we’ll book a live scoring session with members of the professional musician’s union, local 47, contracted by Peter Rotter, to be produced on one of Hollywood’s scoring stages. Once the score is remixed and dubbed to picture we’ll present a screening of the finished score to picture. The screening event, produced in partnership with ASCAP and the SCL, will be open to the public and include a panel discussion with the composer and SMPTV program director, Brian King. We had hoped to involve SMPTV alum, and 2-time Oscar nominee, Marco Beltrami as our very 1st mentor but, due to scheduling conflicts, Marco will not be able to participate in this year’s residence program. Stay tuned for more details, including the selection of the ASCAP composer for the program. Many thanks to everyone at ASCAP, the ASCAP Foundation and the Society of Composers and Lyricists.
